Director of Studies for Bachelor Programmes in Science and Engineering at Maastricht University

Maastricht University is looking for educational leaders to further strengthen the educational profile of Maastricht University in the Science and Engineering domains.

In September 2011, Maastricht University has started bachelor education in the natural sciences with the Maastricht Science Programme. Currently, the total enrolment is already more than 300 students from over 50 countries. In the meantime also two new master programmes have been developed in biobased materials and systems biology. It is the ambition of Maastricht University to further strengthen these programmes and to develop additional programmes in science and engineering in the future.

We are searching for a talented and motivated candidate with a solid background in any area of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to join our team as director of studies bachelor education. Initial focus of the appointment will be on the day-to-day educational management of the Maastricht Science Programme. With the growth of the faculty the director will also be involved in the development of new programs as well as facilitating synergy between existing programs. The position will report directly to the Dean Sciences and will become part of the educational management team of the faculty.

The candidate should have a strong educational track record in one of the STEM areas, including prior experience in educational management, accreditation and programme development, preferably in an international setting. The candidate needs to have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, since this is the main focus area of this position. In addition to educational management, the candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching courses, skills and projects for bachelor students. The candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise bachelor thesis students in their research endeavours. However, research is not expected to become a major activity of the candidate. Candidates with a multidisciplinary interest and willingness to cross boundaries between disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The director of studies is expected to become an active part of our community, advising students, mentoring staff, organizing activities, building a scientific network for our students and staff to explore and establishing contacts with other faculties within Maastricht, the Netherlands and across the world.

The Maastricht Science Programme follows the tradition of the ‘Liberal Arts and Sciences’, with an emphasis on student centred learning in a small-scale college-community. At the Maastricht Science Programme, this student centred learning is characterized by the opportunity for students to build their own curriculum in the natural sciences, intensive staff-student interactions in small groups, community building, extracurricular activities and personal guidance. The programme is taught in English and is highly selective. Combined with the unique strengths of Maastricht University, such as problem based learning, an international focus and working at the edge of research and entrepreneurship in an inspiring environment, the Maastricht Science Programme offers an innovative concept of education in the natural sciences. Lectures and group meetings of the Maastricht Science Programme take place in the historic centre of Maastricht, whereas the practical parts (skills, projects, undergraduate research) of the programme are carried out in our new laboratories at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus near Geleen.

We offer:
  • An associate professor position 1,0fte (level 2 or preferably the higher level 1)
  • Initially a temporary 5 year contract as associate professor with agreed specific goals. Depending on your track record and/ or as soon as the goals have been met, you will get a permanent contract.
  • €4815-6438 gross p/m (salary scale 13 or 14 depending on experience)
  • An international academic environment and student community.
  • The charming Maastricht city in the heart of Europe and an excellent research environment at the Brightlands Chemelot campus.

You have:
  • A PhD in a STEM area
  • An excellent track record, which reflects a strong commitment to science and engineering education.
  • Essential experience with educational management at the academic bachelor level.
  • Good familiarity with science teaching at the bachelor level in an international college setting would be considered an asset when applying.
