Editor/Communications adviser with focus on research communications

As editor/communications adviser you acquaint yourself with the research conducted at the School of Business and Economics, and together with research theme leaders you develop ways of communicating this research in an accessible manner to an array of target groups, ranging from the European Commission to the public at large. You analyse the interrelated communications issues and proactively develop a communications approach. You provide advice to academic staff on how they can best present their work, and in this context you also write and edit (web)texts. You update the website’s research content and relevant social media. This also includes monitoring response and adjusting efforts whenever needed.
Furthermore, you contribute to optimising the School’s internal communications, which includes a weekly newsletter.
You closely collaborate with the university’s central press department and editorial team, as well as with other departments within the School.

Do you write well? Can you translate complex subject matter into easily comprehensible texts? Do you like to keep track of situations? Do you know how to create closer ties within an organisation and persuade people? Do you have an interest in science and in economic and business issues in particular? If so, we look forward to receiving your application if you also meet the following requirements:
  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar position, experience in research communication and/or a journalistic background is an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with on line instruments and visual content creation (social media like Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Conceptual capacity and accuracy
  • Persuasiveness and initiative
  • Organizational sensitivity
  • Structured way of working yet flexible when necessary
  • No 9 to 5 mentality, sometimes working in the weekend and in the evening is part of the job
  • Excellent team player
  • Fluent in English and Dutch, in writing and speaking. English is the main language of communication.
  • Relevant HBO+ level or university degree

What we have to offer

Under the condition of good performance, we offer a 0.8 fte fixed appointment after a temporary appointment for a maximum of 2 years.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 2.640,- and a maximum of € 4.166,- gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 10, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).

Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. Other secondary conditions include e.g. partially paid parental leave.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you might also be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing.

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.

School of Business and Economics
The Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE) provides high-quality education to students and conducts excellent research, offering an international perspective in the fields of economics and international business administration. Its seven research themes focus on interdisciplinary solutions to today's global challenges.

The Marketing & Communication (M&C) team of the School consists of six persons, of which two are responsible for the external and internal communications. There is a close cooperation with the central Marketing & Communications department and other departments within the School such as the Graduate School and UMIO. The Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE) is SBE’s central authority on academic research and administers SBE’s PhD programme and research master’s programmes. UMIO is the executive branch of the School.
